SMRT is Not SMART: The Hidden Danger of Overlooking Achievability

We’ve all heard about SMART goals, right? Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Too often, when reviewing strategic goals with clients, I find that teams have instead set SMRT goals – missing the critical element of Achievability. 

It’s understandable. The optimism and drive behind wanting to set a high bar are commendable. Leaders and teams naturally aim high, striving to push boundaries and achieve excellence. However, without considering achievability, this well-intentioned ambition can backfire.

This oversight can lead to significant issues:

  1. Frustration and Burnout: When goals are unrealistic, the team feels constant pressure and a sense of failure. Over time, this leads to frustration and burnout, undermining morale and productivity.

  2. False Perception of Underperformance: Teams may start to believe they are underperforming, even if they are putting in their best effort. This misperception can erode confidence and reduce engagement.

  3. Wasted Potential: Unrealistic goals divert energy from attainable and meaningful accomplishments. When teams are focused on the impossible, they miss opportunities to make real, impactful progress.

Tips for Setting Achievable Goals:

  • Assess Resources and Capabilities: Ensure that the team has the necessary tools, skills, and support to achieve the goals.

  • Break Down Larger Goals: Divide big objectives into smaller, manageable tasks. Celebrate progress along the way to maintain momentum.

  • Regular Check-ins and Adjustments: Continuously evaluate and adjust goals based on team feedback and changing circumstances.

  • Encourage Open Communication: Create a culture where team members feel comfortable discussing challenges and suggesting modifications to goals.

Remember, setting achievable goals is not about lowering standards. It’s about setting your team up for success and sustained motivation. Let’s move from SMRT to truly SMART goals and empower our teams to thrive!
